About the role The key to create smart maintenance is the ability to assess the status of tool’s condition and the ability to predict the remaining lifespan. Consequently, the research will focus on measuring and modelling tool wear.
As a doctoral student, you will study wear mechanisms in MEGA casting toolings under supervision of leading casting experts at Jönköping University. This task is part of research of an industrial research school (m3c, funded by KK-Stiftelsen) which, in an interdisciplinary environment, focuses on the correlation between Microstructure, Mechanical properties, Manufacturing processes, and Components. It consist of a consortium of three Swedish universities and several strong industrial partners. The position is located at Olofström or Mölndal.
Who are you? You are a student who is eager to acquire knowledge and tools to make the transition to a sustainable society. To qualify for this position, you must meet the general entry requirement for third-cycle studies: a completed degree at the second-cycle level, achieved at least 240 credits, of which a minimum of 60 credits must have been achieved at second-cycle level, or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad. You have strong communication skills, proficient in both written and spoken English. Knowledge of Swedish is advantageous but not mandatory. It is essential that you have a degree and knowledge in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
It is meritorious if you:
have experience working in an international team environment with colleagues from both academy and industry
are result-oriented, motivated, and willing to face challenges
have hands-on experience with data analysis and model regression
experience of applied industrial measurement technology
experience of modelling and numerical simulation
have experience publishing in a scientific journal

In the Manufacturing Processes department, we develop industrial processes that combine quality, performance, sustainability, and productivity in a long-term perspective within forming and joining technology, additive manufacturing, casting and heat and surface treatment. We often get involved at the idea stage, which is why we also work with applied concept and product development.

You are involved in the entire chain from idea generation and formulation of the application/quote to practical planning and implementation. The work is carried out in publicly funded research projects or in commercial assignments.

Who are you?
You who apply are university engineers, civil engineers or have a PhD in mechanics or physics. You are interested in research and development and want to be involved in shaping future production. You have experience in putting together and project managing cross-functional teams. Being able to combine research questions with industrial understanding is central. Furthermore, you are used to work independently and find it exiting to develop knowledge, package it and pass it on. A growing area for us is tooling technology. You are therefore particularly interesting to us if you have expertise in sensor technology, data analytics or modeling (e.g. wear).

As a person, you are analytical, outgoing, proactive, unprestigious and easy to collaborate with. You are fluent in Swedish and English in speech and writing and can present results in an easy-to-understand manner, both orally and in writing.

You are used to working both practically and theoretically. In our lab, for example, you will carry out tensile tests and Nakajima tests, and then generating input data for FE simulations. You will participate in national and EU projects to further develop both numerical and physical methods of advanced material characterization. You will support customers in solving problems related to sheet metal forming operations, and materials in general. You will be shaping future production in cross-functional teams within all the technical areas of the department and implementing novel cutting-edge AI-technology.
